Guide to Learning Rhythm

Learning rhythm is going to take ear training practice. In order to hear a beat you need to know what it is and what it sounds like.  The beat will be the most essential thing you will learn because beats are the building block of rhythm.

Beats are very distinct sounds which make themselves known when an object is struck. They can behave in many different ways and for different lengths of time.

Now, it time to build the rhythm.  This is done by arranging the beats into different metrical structures.

Once you have the timing down, then all that's left is working on your groove.  This is the way you smooth out the movements and match the swing of the music.  Your groove along with your personal dance style is what makes you stand out the most as a dancer.
